Bomb explodes in Khulna Awami League office

A bomb exploded in the ruling party Awami League office in the Shiromoni area in Khulna Metropolitan city on Monday evening.

The bomb blasted around 6:30 pm but no casualties reported in this explosion as there was no one in the office at that time, according to media reports.

Khanjahan Ali Thana Awami League unit president Sheikh Abid Hosen escaped from the blast as he got out of the office sometime before the bomb exploded. There was no one in the office after Abid Hosen go away.

Soon after the blast, leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies staged demonstration bringing out a procession at the Shiromoni area on Dhaka-Joshore highway.

Senior officials of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) visited the spot.

Locals said Sheikh Abid was inside the party office along with local leaders and activists before Maghrib prayer. Later he got out of the office to join the extended meeting of Awami League’s Khulna Metropolitan unit. The bomb exploded with a huge sound shortly after his departure.

Sumon Gazi, who was in there, said that a middle-aged man kept a bag inside the office saying he would take the bag soon after returning from the restroom.

Kabir Hossain, Inspector of Khanjahan Ali police station said the trace of the explosion was found at the scene. But detailed will be confirmed after the investigation of the bomb disposal unit.

Earlier in 1997, a man named Manjurul Islam was killed in a bomb attack in front of the office in the same area.
